McClain Family Members to Attend Centennial

The following was excerpted from a story by MHS graduate Angela Shepherd that appeared in the Times Gazette newspaper…

” Edward Lee McClain’s granddaughter and her children will be in attendance at the centennial celebration for McClain High School set for Labor Day weekend, according to Greenfield Exempted Village School District Superintendent Joe Wills.

Wills reported at Monday’s school board meeting that McClain’s family attending has been confirmed.

District treasurer Joe Smith said that a member of the centennial committee traveled to Georgia where McClain’s granddaughter lives and spoke with the family about the upcoming celebration.

On a related matter, Wills reported that the centennial committee has recently printed programs for the event and they are available at businesses throughout Greenfield.

McClain High School was dedicated on Sept. 1, 1915 and the first students eventually filed into its hallways and classrooms, which are dotted with approximately 200 art pieces — reliefs, murals, statues and paintings that remain today.

The centennial celebration event is set for Sept. 4-6 and will include tours of the high school, a Centennial Tea, an ice cream social, a 5K run/walk, a dance, continuous video of historical films of McClain High School and Greenfield, a re-dedication ceremony, and more.”
